University of Leicester

We offer a school-led initial teacher training (ITT) scheme, run by a partnership between a lead school, and our accredited teacher training provider, in this case the University of Leicester.

A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in. Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Secondary Placements
In school, your subject teaching will be closely monitored and supported by mentors in the faculty. Phase B begins and a substantial period of teaching experience including a subject project, other activities and finally a reduced teaching load, before a welcome summer break!

Primary Course Details

LiFE Primary PGCE is run in partnership with University of Leicester.
Students on the School-led PGCE course follow a broadly similar course to students on the University-led route. They spend the same amount of time on school placements, study side-by-side at the University for most of their taught sessions and receive the same high quality support from University tutors throughout the course.
The PGCE Primary course will prepare you to teach across the full range of the Primary Curriculum. We will introduce you to the wider context of teaching, including responding to diversity in school and the inclusion of Special Needs Education, as well as equipping you with classroom management and planning skills.
This course is made up of both campus-based sessions – which will give you a grounding in the principles of good teaching practice – and school-based placements giving you the chance to apply your knowledge and experience a wide range of classroom situations. These placements will be in contrasting schools to give you a broad range of experience – they could be in city, suburban or rural schools, in the independent or state sector.
By the end of the course you will meet the required professional standards for Qualified Teachers Status (QTS), and will be awarded a University of Leicester PGCE.

Teach for LiFE trainees have always been successful in securing teaching posts, with many of them gaining employment in LiFE and Partner Schools. A good number of our former trainees now have posts of responsibility in schools and work as subject leaders, senior managers and headteachers.
